Think back to your first day at work. The nervous handshake. The questions you were too shy to ask. And maybe one person who made it easier just by saying, “Stick with me today.” Now imagine the day the roles switch, and someone new is looking at you for answers. For many people, that moment comes sooner than they expect. And it often teaches them more than they teach the newcomer.
You know more than you think
When a new teammate asks how to start a conversation, how to handle a “no,” or how to keep energy up by the afternoon, you might be surprised to find you already have the answers. Not from a textbook, but from your own experience. Every real conversation you’ve had has quietly turned into knowledge. Guiding someone else is one of the clearest ways to see how far you’ve come.
Explaining makes you sharper
Sooner or later, a new teammate asks “why?” Why does this approach work better than that one? Why do you start the day this way? If you’ve been doing something on instinct, putting it into words forces you to slow down and look at it closely. You notice what works, what doesn’t, and what you do simply out of habit. Teaching turns experience into understanding, for both of you.
People learn from what you do, not just what you say
A newer colleague watches how you handle a tough morning, a missed target, or a conversation that didn’t go your way. Your reaction teaches more than any advice you give. That’s where leadership starts. Not with a title, but with how you show up when things get hard, especially when someone is watching and learning from you.
Patience is a skill too
Helping someone else grow means remembering that you once needed time to learn too. You practise explaining things more than once, adjusting to how another person learns, and celebrating their progress instead of rushing it. Those same qualities make you a better colleague, communicator, and future leader.
You don’t need to have it all figured out
You don’t need years of experience to support someone newer than you. You only need to remember what it felt like to be new and be willing to share honestly what you’ve learned since.
At Elvanx Inc, we believe strong teams are built this way: people who learned from others, then turn around and help the next person find their footing. If you’re given the chance to guide someone, take it. You may find you grow just as much as they do.
